What parents, students and fellow educators are saying about Batson Independent Education:
Can science with Mrs. Batson be any more fun? My daughter’s enthusiasm and interest for science has blossomed this school year. She is so eager and willing to share the wealth of knowledge that she learns each week in science class. With Mrs. Batson’s witty and informative weekly newsletters, I am learning just as much as my daughter is — my brain gets energized every Friday morning! The carefully thought-out and crafted projects that are brought home every week find themselves in the special “science bin” that gets rummaged through on a daily basis. Mrs. Batson has instilled a love for learning and a love for science in my daughter. For that, we are so grateful. I can’t wait for my little one to start science with Mrs. Batson next year.

Mrs. Batson has a true gift for inspiring young scientists! Her dynamic program is a perfect addition to any preschool curriculum. Our young learners benefit from her hands-on, multi-faceted approach to teaching the biological sciences. Each lesson is laced with both direct teaching (affectionately known as “the show”) along with crafts and activities that perfectly reinforce the concepts being taught. Mrs. Batson’s witty demeanor makes science fun for learners of all ages! Her program is hands down the most successful enrichment program offered at our school. Parents love that their children are immersed in science at such a young age! We love Mrs. Batson’s science enrichment programs!

Mrs. Batson has been enhancing our preschool program for 4 years. We offer a Science Enrichment Program during the school year, as well as, a Summer Camp Program. Both of these programs have received rave reviews from our families. The classes are presented in an attention-grabbing and enthusiastic manner. The children are riveted! Mrs. Batson chooses topics that young children are curious about and she provides interesting, hands-on experiences that reinforce the lessons. We are very pleased that Mrs. Batson is part of our program!

Joan Batson is a Master Teacher. The biggest lesson she teaches is how to love learning. It looks like science, math, language arts, or history, but, these are tools used for the real lesson, learning to joyfully learn. With Mrs Batson, it is safe to boldly take risks, make fantastic mistakes, try again and ultimately succeed. This is the critical knowledge which is missing from so many of today’s classroom, and is essential for later professional success. She bolsters confidence and creates an environment where the learner is eager to achieve mastery in whatever subject she presents. Mrs Batson has made my son a confident, enthusiastic and capable person. He is able to successfully integrate his knowledge in practical ways, seamlessly merging science with history, math with art and most importantly, communicate what he is doing and why. Our motto is “Teach Life.” Mrs Batson understands exactly how to do this.

Ryan has just started his second year of Science Enrichment and it is a wonderful experience that adds to his Kindergarten curriculum. He learns so much each week and has developed a true appreciation of the science that is all around him. Mrs. Batson brings her passion for science to every class, making it fun and interactive. The children retain so much. I have also had the privilege of volunteering in class and seeing first hand the enjoyment science class brings. I’ve learned a few things myself! I would encourage all parents to sign up! Thank you so much for making this class available for our little scientists.

I have been an RN for 17 years and my sons, Jackson and Drew have taught me things they learned from Mrs. Batson’s science classes!

My children have been a part of Mrs. Batson’s science enrichment class (and summer camp!) for going on three years now and we LOVE it! My kids enjoy Mrs. Batson’s fun, silly & sometimes messy way of teaching science and I love that they are learning. It is amazing, the concepts and vocabulary that they come home with. We look forward to many more years in the program.

It is difficult to put into words just how much our experience with Joan Batson has impacted our lives. And I say “our” because she not only teaches my son but our whole family. It is just such a wonderful thing, truly a blessing, to have a teacher that loves learning about the world and imparts that excitement in everything she brings to us. There is no such thing as “boredom” in her classes! The time always flies by too quickly, with the children as well as the adults. The preparation, detail, and hands on activities she brings, are exceptional in every way. Mrs. Batson is a portable classroom, lab and workshop ready to engage and excite learners, wherever they may be. We began with her at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, then had a few semesters at PALS Enrichment classes in Pittsburgh and now she comes right to our front door. The evolution of our “classroom” experience is particularly important to me because there is no difference in the quality of the experiences she offers, no matter what the venue. Mrs. Batson is one of those “special” teachers that children (and adults) will remember for the rest of their lives.

Our children have taken enrichment classes all over Pittsburgh — and in other cities too. We have found Mrs. Batson’s classes to be superior in that the material is targeted to our children’s level, has incredible depth, and is cheaper than week-long classes. Our kids learn more and have more free time! From DNA sequencing, to Egyptian mummies, to art to real-world mathematics (including dinosaur math), Mrs. Batson does it all — and does it in a way that our children grow a love of learning.

I wanted to write to you to let you know how PLEASED we are with the Science Camp. We have a 6 year old boy and a 4 year old girl enrolled in the camp and we are extremely pleased with the curriculum. The camp is very engaging for both boys and girls and my kids inform me that this is their favorite camp ever!
Mrs. Batson is a great resource who understands how to engage with children and both of my kids look forward to the camp each week! They come home and teach me what the learned at camp. We have been telling all of our neighbors and the kids classmates about this camp.

The Science Enrichment Program has been a terrific addition to my son’s after school activities. The science and nature programs each week are educational, creative, and above all fun! Their teacher really gets the kids interested in exploring and learning about the world around them!

The science enrichment program at Salem is wonderful! Mrs. Batson and her curriculum have truly opened up Stella’s life to a whole new world. This class has made a connection between learning inside the classroom and learning outside the classroom for Stella. Her appreciation for living things carries itself outside the classroom everyday, thanks to Mrs. Batson’s creative, engaging curriculum. I highly recommend this enrichment class to other students with or without an interest in science due to its fun, hands-on nature Mrs. Batson creates for the children.
Thanks,

Thank you so much for offering the science class at Salem Preschool. Robert and I both love it! Mrs. Batson creates a fun, loving environment and makes learning about science playing with a purpose. With budget cuts in schools all across the area, kindergarten class sizes are getting bigger and bigger and the teachers don’t have the time or the resources to spend much time in any one area. This class enables the children to take their time exploring and learning about their world.
Robert begins asking on Saturday morning, “do I have science class today?”! I can’t think of a better way to instill a love of learning.
Again, thank you so much!
Sincerely,
Parent
