What is substance abuse? In this course we will define abuse and identify some of its causes such as peer pressure or pain. What are the differences between physical addiction and psychological addiction? Who becomes addicted? What is a street drug? Is alcohol a drug?
Prescription drugs and their misuse will be covered. How are over-the-counter-medications, such as laxatives and diuretics misused? How do self-esteem and body image contribute to addictions?
A review of some past history and misconceptions will be included. Learn about the opium dens, Coca Cola, and the psychedelics that helped define the 1960’s. The dangerous and violent world of the drug trade will be covered. Finally, there will be discussion on the legalization versus decriminalization, punishment versus treatment arguments.
